The 2011 Heroines Series offered a selection of brave new work by women. It consisted of one full production of a new work for public audiences and two plays in development. The play development workshops culminated in a public reading of the new scripts.

CURVALICIOUS 2011

At once a celebration of Calgary’s women in theatre and a unique fundraiser, Curvalicious 2011 featured an eclectic and exciting line-up of female talent and was hosted by ever popular leading lady, Karen Johnson-Diamond!

The 2011 variety acts included everything from musical guests, to improvised comedy acts, to monologues, to pregnant burlesque. (Yes, pregnant burlesque.)

*World Premiere* IT IS SOLVED BY WALKING by Catherine Banks

It is Solved by Walking Poster

Governor General Award-winning playwright Catherine Banks brings us the poetic and sensual journey of a woman in mid-life. Margaret is facing a crisis of self. Looking back on her life all she can see is the failures — as a writer, an academic, a wife, a mother, and is desperate for some way to stem the tide. Unable to think of anything else, Margaret sends herself on a journey through the haunting poem by Pulitzer-prize-winner Wallace Stevens, “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,” searching for peace, breath, and permission to leave a lot life behind her. Margaret has good company for the journey; Wallace Stevens himself is there to needle and nag, coax and cajole her with every methodical step.
